Bin Picking Small Parts Using AI
Customer
The customer is a globally recognized aerospace parts manufacturer based in Europe.
Challenge
Overcoming Manual Bottlenecks in High-Mix Small Parts Kitting
Facing increasing demand and the need for greater efficiency, the customer sought to establish a fully automated kitting line. A significant bottleneck was the manual organization of a high volume of diverse parts, characterized by varying sizes and irregular SKUs. Notably, some critical components were as small as 5 mm. The reliance on a less versatile flex feeder resulted in substantial daily labor effort, increased the potential for errors, and limited the overall throughput of their kitting process. Recognizing the limitations of their existing setup, the customer proactively sought a more advanced and agile automation solution.
Solution
AccuPick Intelligent Bin Picking System
To address these challenges, the customer implemented AccuPick, Solomon’s smart bin picking solution, featuring a comprehensive 3D vision system capable of identifying over 50 different part types within a single workstation. Leveraging AccuPick’s advanced 3D vision and AI-powered recognition algorithms, the system successfully identified and picked even the smallest 5 mm washers, despite overlapping with other components. Detecting and handling objects of such small size in cluttered environments has traditionally been a significant challenge for material handling systems. However, Solomon’s sophisticated AI vision-based technology effectively overcame this obstacle, demonstrating AccuPick’s strong capabilities in handling complex and diverse part inventories.
