PCB Assembly Inspection with AI and AR Glasses

Case Overview

Industry: Electronics

Solution: META-aivi

A Fortune Global 500 technology company needed a more reliable way to verify PCB assembly and identify missing or incorrectly placed electronic components. META-aivi and RealWear AR glasses were used to verify component presence and placement during PCB assembly and record inspection results for quality analysis.

PCB Assembly and Electronic Component Inspection

The Case

PCB Assembly Verification and Component Placement

PCB assembly inspection requires operators to verify that all required electronic components are present and installed in the correct locations.

Missing or incorrectly placed components can affect PCB functionality and overall product quality, making reliable inspection an important part of the assembly process.

The Challenge

Reducing Human Error During PCB Assembly Inspection

PCB assembly and inspection were traditionally performed manually. The reflective surfaces of PCB components can contribute to eye strain during prolonged inspection under artificial lighting.

Combined with operator fatigue, these conditions can make missing or incorrectly placed components more difficult to identify consistently. The customer therefore required an inspection method that could help operators detect assembly errors before they affected finished PCB quality.

The Solution

PCB Component Inspection with META-aivi and RealWear Glasses

The customer implemented META-aivi with RealWear AR glasses to support PCB assembly inspection.

During inspection, operators use the AR glasses to identify PCB components and verify whether required components are present and correctly placed. When META-aivi identifies a missing or incorrectly placed component, the operator can correct the assembly error during the inspection process.

Inspection results are simultaneously uploaded to the customer’s server, creating a record of completed inspections. The recorded data can then be analyzed to identify opportunities to refine assembly and quality control procedures.

Presence/Absence and Component Placement Verification

META-aivi performs PCB assembly inspection and identifies an incorrect or missing component with bounding box overlays.META-aivi verifies PCB component presence and placement with bounding box overlays indicating a passed inspection.
META-aivi performs PCB assembly inspection and providing examples of NG and OK outputs.

META-aivi performs presence/absence and component placement verification during PCB inspection. The system checks whether required components are present in their designated locations and indicates whether the inspected assembly passes verification or contains an assembly anomaly.

The Results

Faster PCB inspection by reducing average inspection time across the assembly line.
Better quality control by reducing the impact of human error and operator fatigue.
More actionable inspection data for refining assembly and quality control procedures.
